How one former Japanese boyband member tried to save Sushiro after its business went downhill

Japanese singer Yuya Tegoshi, 35, has made good on this word to support conveyor belt sushi chain Sushiro.

The chain had seen its stock price plummet by about ¥16.8 billion (S$171 million) after a video showing a young student licking a soy sauce bottle and a cup went viral.

Twitter users have shared images of empty Sushiro restaurants following the incident, though it is not clear if they are directly related.

According to The Japan Times, several videos of people committing unhygienic acts at conveyor belt sushi restaurants have since emerged.

This phenomenon is known as “sushi terrorism”, or “sushi tero” in Japanese.

“I’ve always wanted to go to Sushiro but haven’t been able to because it’s always crowded. But the situation now is the absolute worst for them, so I’m definitely going to visit,” former member of Japanese boyband NEWS tweeted on Feb. 2, 2023.

Yuya left the band in June 2020, when it was reported that his contract with Johnny & Associates, which NEWS is part of, had been terminated.

This was after he had been put on hiatus for attending drinking parties despite orders to stay home while the country was under a state of emergency due to the pandemic.

Yuya’s tweet received more than 1,000 retweets and almost 10,000 likes, with many agreeing with his sentiments.

Fulfilled his promise

Four days later on Feb. 6, Yuya tweeted a series of pictures of himself at Sushiro.

According to his tweet, it is his first time at a Sushiro restaurant.

Yuya praised the “reasonable” prices and said that he was “very satisfied” with his meal.

His tweet was similarly met with an outpouring of support, with many sharing their own Sushiro meals.
