Dee Kosh’s 51-minute tell-all video summarised in 7 points

Darryl Ian Koshy, who goes by Dee Kosh, has released a 51-minute tell-all video explaining his side of the story, where he denies being a paedophile.

The former radio deejay had recently served 32 weeks in prison for sexual offences involving teenage boys, and recently returned to social media in March.

He had pleaded guilty to:

• One count of sexual exploitation of a boy under the age of 18
• One count of offering money to a boy below 18 for sexual services
• One count of making an obscene film

Four other charges were taken into consideration in sentencing.

Here’s what he said in the video, summarised:

1. He considered himself a “sugar daddy”

His relationships with the boys involved were more of a sugar daddy/sugar baby arrangement as his packed schedule made it difficult for him to pursue romantic relationships.

Another reason, he said, was that he was “not the most attractive person in the room”.

“You know, I was chubby, I was the funny guy you know? I’m dark-skinned, and especially in the pink queer world, that’s not top tier,” he said.

On top of that, he was also “deep inside the closet” at that time.

While he acknowledged that such arrangements were “dodgy”, it was not unlawful.

Where he “f**ked up”, Darryl says, was offering sugaring to people who were not looking for such an arrangement.

2. He did not know that having a sugar relationship with a 17-year-old was against the law

He admitted to knowing that one of his sugar babies was 17 years old, but he did not know that this was illegal until allegations surfaced against him.

Four police reports stated that he had offered money for sex when the victims were 17.

Darryl confirmed that these were true, but clarified that he was not aware they had to be 18 to have commercial sex.

Commercial sex, or paying for sex, with persons under 18 is a punishable offence under section 376B of the Penal Code.

There was also another case involving a 15-year-old whom he had met on Grindr, a gay dating app.

To this, he said that he did not realise that the person was 15, until they moved the conversation to Instagram.

He acknowledges that he should have cut him off, but wanted to “remain cordial”.

3. His sex tapes “saved [his] life”

Police had also found two videos that Darryl had filmed of himself having sex with someone. That person had not given prior consent to appear on camera during the act.

Darryl claimed that the other party, who was 23 to 24 years old at that time, later made a police report against him for rape, an allegation which he said “made [his] knees tremble”.

Darryl had met the other party on Instagram, and he had gone over to Darryl’s house to hook up.

This, according to him, was consensual.

He recalled that there was something in his gut that told him to film the encounter, and claims that he does not usually do this.

Darryl thinks that the videos “saved [his] life, in a way”.

4. He is not a paedophile

Darryl said that he was not “specifically looking” for 17-year-olds.

“It wasn’t like I was… outside a secondary school, like just waiting and looking for 17-year-olds,” he explains, adding that he had just seen people on Instagram whom he found to be good looking, and “just happen[ed] to be 17”.

His lawyers had also asked him to go for a psychiatric assessment to determine if he was a paedophile.

Darryl read out the conclusion of the psychiatric assessment:

“He does not fulfil clinical diagnostic criteria for paedophilic disorder. Darryl did not exhibit any paedophilic disorder and that his risk of re-offending was very low.”

After he pleaded guilty, the prosecution requested that Darryl undergo a second psychiatric assessment, which reaffirmed that he had a low risk of reoffending and was not a paedophile.

The influencer also said that he has lasting trauma from the saga.

During Chinese New Year, he was afraid to approach his cousin’s young children, not because he was afraid of them, but because of what his cousins might think.

He also shared how he automatically walked around the playground when he went to a friend’s place recently, because he did not want to make anyone uncomfortable.

Darryl clarified several times that he was not attracted to children.

5. Reportage of the issue was misleading

He added that there was “no real sex” between him and the 17-year-olds.

However, media headlines seemed to imply that he had sex with the victims.

“There was no sex. It was the attempt; it was the communication of that I am charged for,” he maintained.

6. He pleaded guilty despite disagreeing with some parts of the statement of facts

The statement of facts is a document prepared by the prosecution which contains the relevant facts of the offence.

Darryl said he had issues with the statement of facts as there were many things that he “didn’t remember saying”.

For example, it was alleged that he had asked for anal sex, which he claimed was not something he liked.

He was also accused of driving to the victim’s school to pick him up so that the pair could have sex.

“I came to a point in my situation where I was financially drained out, you know, I had no more money, I had no more will to fight anymore,” he said.

“I decided to bite the bullet and say… if they say they have evidence, or they deem it to be true, then let it be true… I will always say I don’t know because I don’t remember saying those things.”

7. He is sorry

He apologised to the people he had messaged, and assured them that it would not happen again.

“I wish I could take it back, but I can’t. I wish you all the best in life,” he said.

Visibly emotional, he also said he didn’t know why people chose to stick around to hear his side of the story.

Darryl started crying at this point.

“I have a very deep debt that I feel like I now only paid to y’all. I said I will tell my story and that’s what I’m doing. And I want to thank you for listening.”

He also thanked the people around him who “never left”, and said that he was afraid to name them for fear that they might get attacked.

Darryl also expressed gratitude to his family:

“You want to be your family to be proud of you. Obviously that didn’t happen. But in the end, after everything, I don’t know whether they’re proud of me, but I know for sure that I’m so proud of them.”
